In March 2020, when quarantine started, I stayed home with my two kids, ages 3 years + 4 months. It was hard, exhausting, and scary. I turned my camera on my children as we found creative ways to stay sane and have fun. We found nature in the city within forest preserves and tiny beaches. We ran outside when it rained and jumped in puddles. My 3-year-old covered himself in paint and made giant paintings that ended in colorful popsicle baths. We roasted S’mores over the stove and my husband “camped” with my son in the basement. We projected aquariums on every wall, and learned about sharks and sea animals. We drove to South Carolina for a month to stay with my parents and get some help with the boys and be by the ocean. I showed my son the sunrise for the first time. Instead of my youngest going back to daycare in March, I got so much extra time with him at home to watch him grow and bond with his brother. Eventually we decided to sell our house in Chicago and move to Colorado. We are riding out COVID in airbnb’s until we find a permanent home. Though I’ve cried a lot, yelled a lot, and am frustrated a lot— looking back on these pictures, I just see so much love and am so grateful for our health, our jobs, and our sweet little family.
